love is only
So that smile doesn't freeze over
I'll make a wish
In my favourite café, beyond the door
There's the unchanging scent of coffee
I felt my eyes soften
When I stood at the footbridge and gazed out
Scattered all across, here and there
Were countless footprints
Even if I chased after the countless traces of you existing there
The wind blows, it's freezing cold
But even though it's the same scarf I wrapped around my neck last year
For some reason, it's just not warm enough
You light up this city as if an illumination, and with that beauty you stop my breath
Even though yours is a shadow I can't reach, I slowly closed my eyes
On that winter day
I'm beginning to forget you, but too close by
Was the perfume I picked up without thinking
With the same scent
In the city streets reflected through the glass
I'm expecting a familiar silhouette to appear
As if I'm waiting for it
If we could be torn away from this blinding world, I would've wanted to be together
That was how I felt
But without knowing how it felt to be tied to something, my right hand grew numb with cold
It hurts, doesn't it?
Even if I ran out of breath, we wouldn't be able to meet right away
I know that
But even so, I still love you
Even if I chased after the countless traces of you existing there
The wind blows, it's freezing cold
But even though it's the same scarf I wrapped around my neck last year
For some reason, it's just not warm enough
You light up this city like an illumination, and with that beauty please don't slide from my memories
I whisper to your unreachable shadow with frozen breath,
"Love is only"
1. *crawls out of six hundred years of translation hibernation for mezzo* I guess you could say moonlight illumination Woke me up (that sounded more clever in my head)
2. 90% of why I'm so enthusiastic about this song is because of the adlibs, which are also, the one part that I'm not transcribing or translating, so, well done self. ANYWAYS THE ADLIBS ARE SO GOOD THANK U MEZZO, there's so much musically going on in this song that I am Extremely Here For, but also completely lacking in music theory knowledge to vocalize properly.
3. alright so firstly here's a few notes about how I've transcribed things!
- "coffee" is in kanji instead of in katakana because. Why not
- "suki" is written in katakana as a miss you throwback despite these songs being written by two different lyricists so in the actual lyrics it is almost 100% probably written as 好き
- "love is only" is also written in katakana instead of straight english as an aikotoba throwback
- the only thing I'm still really hung up over is the "期待" after silhouette, but pretty much every jp kikitori I looked at had it as 期待 so I rolled with it! Stay Tuned for how poorly I translate that line
4. I'm So Glad there's something I want to yell about in the very first line of this song! okay so I think this is my Interpretation Soapbox at work but I feel like this song is basically about the conflict between wanting to forget about someone and not wanting to forget about them, and the sense I get is that ultimately even though it's painful to remember them, the singer doesn't want to forget about the person they've lost. so basically when they say "so your smile won't freeze over", they're talking less about the person's smile in question and more about their personal memories regarding that smile freezing over? HAVE I MENTIONED I' MVERY ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT MEZZo
5. idk every time I listen to this song I feel more and more certain mezzo is singing at a dead person they can't forget about so that "息を切る" line sounds less like "even if I strain myself and also my breathing i.e. by great physical exertion" and an awful lot more like "even if I Physically And Literally Stopped Breathing"
6. actually are we sure mezzo aren't the dead ones o__O Like Are We Positive Love Isn't The Only Thing Keeping Their Sad Mournful Spirits Attached To This World
ok I will stop now
7. 影踏み/kagefumi is apparently a children's game where basically it's like tag, only instead of physically tagging each other they try to step on each others' shadows! so a "届かない影踏み" is sort of like "a fruitless game of shadow tag", but I'm not sure if... shadow tag is really.... that common a phrase in english? so I took out the "tag" part and just made it about shadows, but I think it's worth mentioning how some of the parallels between "届かない影踏みながら" and "届かない影に囁く" - the first one (in the first chorus) is "an attempt (that won't reach) to step on your shadow" and the second one (in the last chorus) is "whispering to the shadow (I couldn't reach)".
And Like
Are we sure mezzo aren't dead ghosts trying to step on an alive person's shadow Like Are We Positive #TsukiakariIlluminateGhostsTheory
8. I took out the "white" part in "white sigh" in the last verse because it just looked kind of odd to me, like I know what the lyrics are saying is it's winter and cold and when that happens you can see your breath freeze white, hence "white sigh", but
anyways to try to convey a similar tone without flat out writing "white sigh", cue me googling "synonyms for cold" very frantically
> "frosty"
ok so much for that idea
9. if anyone has a poetic way of translating "pedestrian bridge crossing" I will gladly accept suggestions because that one verse has given me so much drama and This is why I generally don't do lyric translations because I have 0 sense of poetry But For MEZZO", I Must
10. take a shot every time I use the word "even" in a lyric
11. eventually I just gave up on trying to think of a good synonym for "countless" in the "countless footprints" because I felt like saying "there's countless footprints" and then "the countless traces of you" is a bit repetitive, but then I remembered one of the first impressions I got from the lyrics in this part was basically "of those countless footprints on the pedestrian bridge crossing, some of them are yours — but there's so many, I can't chase them down" so I decided to/gave up and kept "countless" in both sections
12. as a general note I tried* (*note: tried) to make the english lyrics flow nicely rather than worrying too much about literal meaning being carried over, so if things seem wonkily translated (i.e. 目を細めた) that's probably why! for the most part I think the emotion stayed the same but if there are parts where you feel I've taken too many liberties (as well as if there's parts I just plain got wrong), please feel free to let me know!
13. does anyone remember when I wrote about parallels between re:vale and mezzo" music talking about desperation levels? yeah me neither but I feel like this song is another good example of how Highkey Frantic mezzo's songs are — even though miss you and tsukiakari illuminate are really ballad-y songs, they both have really extreme lyrics with really high levels of emotion and I think that gap between "gentle music" and "strong emotions" is one of the aspects of iori's MEZZO" Success Strategy referenced in the mezzo novel chapter
I'm all over the place with this but basically I think all I'm trying to say is I think tsukiakari illuminate fits in very nicely with both koi no kakera and miss you... in mezzo's discography and not just because It's Another Love (knk) / Breakup (my...) Song, but also for some deeper more symbolic-ish/thematic-ish reasons?
I threw out re:vale just because it's also been stated that mezzo was slightly inspired by their image and silsky is pretty high up on the Desperate Emotion level (although in contrast, to my dearest is surprisingly chill and more just about devotion than about desperation) (reflecting of rvl's character arc anyone?) (although the "大好きじゃ足りない" part is pretty desperate in a way now that I think about it) (I'm digressing extremely but I guess now that I think about it, to my dearest probably falls into a similar category as koi no kakera in that they're both Happy Songs, but Still With Very Dramatic/Emotional Lyrics)
(trg songs are pretty dramatic too but I think the 王者感 is pretty significantly different.... trg's songs tend to have a sort of? confidence about them? at least that's the impression I get even from highkey dramatic songs like secret night?) (again these are things I am not exactly qualified or knowledgable enough to speak concretely about but this is just the way I feel, yo)
14. I'm going to be thinking about #TsukiakariIlluminateGhostsTheory until the day I too die and then subsequently also become a sad ghost haunting this world because the only thing stopping me from 100% subscribing to this theory is the fact I would be extremely distressed if tamaki yotsuba my son had to sing a song about being a ghost
15. edited 14 feb: changed the romaji/kana from "ふっと/futto" to "ふと/futo" as per the in-game announcement's lyrics! the meaning stays roughly the same though imo so there isn't much of a change in the translation.
16. also edited 14 feb but mostly because I kept forgetting to do it: I've been thinking a lot about the 見慣れたシルエット期待しているみたい and #MEZZOGHOSTSTHEORY but I've been wondering if maybe it can't be read as "A familiar-looking silhouette seems as if it's expecting something" — in the entire context of the verse it'd sound something like "In the streets of the city reflected through the glass, a familiar-looking silhouette seems almost as if it's waiting for something/one" and like
is the singer basically saying "I see your alive silhouette, waiting for me, and raise you my being dead"
probably not but let me theorize!!!!!!!!
